I’ve only recently had the pleasure of meeting the high-energy, crystal-infused Hibiscus Moon online. I’ve been very curious about crystals and how they can be used for spiritual growth. She was kind enough to answer some questions for me.
Can you tell us a little bit about how and when you got interested in crystals?
Welllll, I’ve been interested in crystals & stones from as far back as I can remember. I was mesmerized by a Smithsonian Museum Crystal book of my father’s at about the age of three. Instead of kid’s books or dolls, I would leaf through that book over & over again, just staring until the pages were worn. Teee!
Of course, I had no idea at the time what these beautiful objects were. I was just totally intrigued that something so gorgeous & perfect could emerge from the dirt & rough rocks. And somehow, I knew they were special.
I came back to crystals and stones later on with some undergraduate and graduate studies in geology. Through teaching science, I succeeded in getting my students just as excited about rocks and crystals as I was!
How long have you been guiding others in the use of crystals?
Hmmmm, I think this all started when I started my YouTube channel in 2007. I was vlogging about crystals & how I was working with them. I was simply rambling on about my own personal research with them & my crystal healing adventures with others. I was also blogging at the time too. It was all just a hobby that kept getting bigger & bigger b/c peeps were so magnetically drawn to working with the crystals too!! And people wanted to know more & more & I was MORE THAN HAPPY to talk about them. I kept getting lots of questions both on the blog & YouTube. I began selling crystals on Etsy in 2009, doing live crystal healing classes for groups in my local area in 2010 and decided to do online crystal classes in early 2011 to answer all the frequently asked questions I was getting. And now it’s all evolved into the Hibiscus Moon Crystal Academy.
It’s all like a growing crystal. I started out kind of like a proto-crystal (a pre-crystal). As the proto-crystal floats around in its crystal growing solution (that would be the Interwebs in my analogy here), it bumps into other solute molecules (more crystal-loving peeps). The solute molecules feel the attractive force of the proto-crystal & they join in. That’s how the crystal begins to grow! Pretty rad, huh? As above, so below!
Do you have a favorite crystal and how do you use it?
Ummm, this is always changing. Right now it’s my large Auralite 23. It’s a newly discovered very interesting kind of crystal, suspected to be quite old (possibly 1.1 BILLION years old!) & has recently become quite a good meditation buddy to me.

What crystals help you with developing your spirituality or connecting with your Higher Self?
Amethyst is always a common favorite for this & very easy to obtain. For some more exotic choices you can also go for apophyllite:

How do you use crystals for spiritual growth?
There are so many ways to do this. The possibilities are endless. Just starting out with them, I recommend meditating with one crystal at a time (just 5-15 minutes) to sense its energies and doing this for a few days in a row. That’s a great way to start out.
Do you keep a crystal journal? Do you have notes about which crystals mean what or do you work with them intuitively?
I used to. I no longer do this, but it’s something I highly recommend to my students when they’re just starting out.
Are there questions you like to ask the crystals?
I don’t ask. I just let the crystal “talk” or let it do what it does naturally. I don’t want to try to control anything or have any bias. Just let it flow.
I like to pick crystals intuitively. I will carry one throughout the day if it speaks to me. Is this beneficial? Why or why not?
Oh yes!!! That’s the best way to work with crystals!! I feel the way that will work best for you will be what you pick up intuitively. It’s different for everyone, that’s why what you read in a book prescriptively may or may not jive with you. Your energy is slightly different than anyone else’s so your intuition knows best.
Any other hints or tips for us?
I’d just say do what your spirit is calling to do. Do what makes your soul belly laugh & makes you feel happy. You won’t ever regret that!
